On Saturday, Kings XI Punjab teammates Ankit Rajpoot and Murugan Ashwin produced their best bowling figures in List A cricket when they took the field for their respective state sides in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
In the Elite Group B fixture between Uttar Pradesh and Punjab at Vadodara, Rajpoot picked up his maiden four-wicket haul in One Day cricket and helped bowl the opposition out for 204.
Opening the bowling, it was Rajpoot who produced the breakthrough in the fifth over when he sent Abhishek Sharma back and in his subsequent over he got rid of Sanvir Singh, the other opener, reducing Punjab to 26/2 in the seventh over, which eventually spiralled to 59/5 in the 20th.
A 108-run partnership between Gurkeerat Singh Mann and Karan Kaila helped stabilise the innings before Rajpoot trapped Mann, who was the day's top-scorer with 66, leg before in the 45th over. He then accounted for wicket-keeper Anmol Malhotra to complete his maiden four-fer in One Day cricket, ending with figures of 4/36 in his 10 overs.
In the three Vijay Hazare matches so far, Rajpoot has picked up nine wickets at an astonishing average of 13.77 and a strike rate of 20.00, while giving away just 4.13 runs per over.
His efforts on Saturday, however, didn't come to fruition as Uttar Pradesh lost the match by 63 runs.
Murugan Ashwin's Tamil Nadu team, though, did manage to win their Elite Group C match against Madhya Pradesh at Jaipur with the 29-year-old leggie picking his One Day best as well.
Defending a mammoth 360/4, MP couldn't get into the chase and were 128/5 in the 22nd over when Ashwin first struck after bowling Rishabh Chouhan. He then bowled Anand Bais, top-scorer for the side at 34, and Ishwar Pandey in the next delivery to reduce Madhya Pradesh to 149/8 at the end of the 28th over.
Eventually bundled out for 149, it gave Tamil Nadu a massive 211-run victory with Ashwin recording a career-best 3/14 in his four overs.
In the five matches so far, Ashwin has picked up 11 wickets at an average of 22.54.
